This time last year, Micah was still a new walker and a bit afraid every time Elijah came running up to him for a hug. This summer, though, the two are inseparable.

A few pics of the two (swiped from Mike's facebook):

Saturday, June 30, 2007

Earlier this week, Sarah and I took Micah, Elijah, and Baby Rachel to Navy Pier's Children's Museum. Today Ruth Bell Graham, Billy Graham's wife, passed away and I became one of those who shed tears for someone I never knew. Rich and I were reading the obit together. The silence was broken when Rich said, "She embodies everything every Christian wants to be. She was faithful."

In college, someone gave me a book that was a collection of Mrs. Graham's memoirs. I never knew she was such a sassy preacher's wife. She'd light rockets under her son's door to get him to wake up in the mornings. She got pulled over for speeding and said to the cop, "Please don't follow me after we're done here, because I'm in a hurry and need to speed again." She broke her arm and kept it a secret from her husband so he wouldn't find out that she'd gone hang gliding. She was once asked if, as a Christian woman, she had ever considered divorce. Her answer: "Divorce? No. Murder? Yes."

But the thing I connected with the most was her unwavering faithfulness to her husband, her family, and her walk with Christ. Not that I had that; I wanted it. I read in her biography that she would regularly, and literally, give the shirt off her back or have quiet conversations with president's wives, her well-worn Bible open in her lap. I'm guessing those were times when the left hand found out what the right hand was doing -- but otherwise, I have a feeling she's done countless more -- 87 years' worth -- acts of faithfulness and worship that have had eternal impact yet seen by only one.

People like Ruth Graham deflate the spiritual pride I have very quickly. The God she adored so faithfully is a God I don't know. I've even contemplated writing her a letter, asking her how she did it all these years, putting up with being apart from her husband for months at a time and raising five kids on her own. Not claiming anything as her own. I've always wanted to ask her what gave her the strength to let go.

Dear Mrs. Graham, I'm sure you are sitting at a very special place at the banquet table right now. I know that when I have the privilege of meeting you, I will see with my own eyes the answer to my question. I am just so humbled that you were able to see it so clearly while you were still here on earth.

http://billygraham.org/RBG_Obituary.asp

Monday, June 04, 2007

footage of Micah

check out my hubbie's facebook account for Micah's rendition of one of his favorite songs: "Old MacDonald Had a Farn".
Friday, May 11, 2007
